It turned out that Windows 10 is automatically downloaded on user machines even when they don’t want to install it. The automatic download takes up from 3.5GB to 6GB of storage space on the machine. Taking into account that some recent Windows computers, including Windows tablets, have only 32GB storage, the download can potentially take up to 20% of the total hard drive space.

The new OS is downloaded in the background without user even knowing about it. This is why people on a slow Internet connection (usually in rural and poorly connected areas) feel that something severely impacts other time-critical activities. Besides, this download could also eat up a significant limit of a metered Internet connection, which can be as little as 40GB per month.

According to user complaints, the Windows 10 downloads occur on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 computers with automatic updates on. While automatic updates are quite useful, as they install bug fixes and security updates, Windows 10 is neither former nor latter – obviously, it is a whole new version of the OS.

Microsoft confirmed that the system “helps computers get ready for Windows 10 by downloading the files”. This is true for users who have chosen to receive automatic updates via Windows Update. Fortunately, Windows 10 won’t install without asking, but it will sit on your hard drive taking up space even if you are not going to ever upgrade. Besides, you can also be prompted to install new Windows operating system every time you device is rebooted.

According to statistics, Windows 10 was used by less than 5% of desktop Internet users last month. Windows 7 accounts for almost 50% share. However, it should be noted that the number of people who upgraded to Window 10 is already greater than those who switched to Windows 7 and Windows 8 after the first month of release.
