Who is Alhaji Adams Mahama? 13655410

His mother hails from Sandema in the Builsa North District and his father is from Tou in Burkina Faso.

He was the third born of the father and the second born from the mother’s side.

This is the brief family background of Alhaji Adams Mahama whose tragic death occurred on Thursday, May 21, 2015 and is expected to be buried today at Bolgatanga.

Alhaji Mahama was confirmed dead in the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital after acid was poured on him by two unidentified men last Wednesday evening.

He was returning from his construction site late in the night when the two unknown assailants stopped him.

Political life

At age 49, Alhaji Mahama was the Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He stood and won the NPP chairmanship during the last NPP congress, the first time he contested a party executive position in the region.

He was an aide to former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, handling a lot of his internal activities. He had a very high commitment towards his duties, sometimes to a fault.

He was also active in the formation of bases known as Parliament for NPP youth in the Upper East Region and also provided logistical support for party activities.

He strongly believed in his conviction and nothing would distract him from achieving those principles so far as he believed that they were the truth.

In many instances, that stance won him a lot of following among the Zongo community and in a way it helped grow the party’s numbership, particularly in the north.

Alhaji Mahama was an energetic person who brought on board a lot of the youth to the NPP, but his excesses and over-enthusiasm also created some challenges for the party to manage.

Adams had been in the news recently after some hired thugs chased out the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko, and General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, from a meeting in the region.

The incensed thugs allegedly attacked the national executive members and others with sticks and broken bottles for organising the meeting without informing the regional chairman.

The timely intervention of the police prevented a bloodbath.

Adams, who was accused as the mastermind of the melee, later apologised but cautioned national executive to respect party structures.

Motivation

As a contractor and the CEO of Adams Mahama Company Limited, he motivated a lot of the youth by providing them with logistics to propagate the activities of the NPP in the Upper East Region.

Alhaji Mahama stood for one idea— to win both the presidential and parliamentary elections and to increase the parliamentary seats of the party in the region.

He sacrificed his life for the NPP and died “like a soldier fighting in a battle for the NPP” in the early hours of Thursday and will be buried according to Muslim tradition today.

Final appeal

His final appeal to the party hierarchy in a statement following disturbances in the region recently was: “This unfortunate development was entirely avoidable. It has brought to the fore two urgent matters which have to be rectified as soon as possible and the elected national officers of the party must be proactive in doing so.

“Firstly, I am appealing to the National Chairman and General Secretary to stop this habit of sidelining elected officers they do not like. They must respect the structures of the party and work with its structures and hierarchy, including their colleagues at the headquarters and the regional chairmen across the country.

The more they seek to sideline those the Party Constitution says they must work with the more suspicion and problems they fuel in the NPP.

“We in the regions are willing and ready to work with all of them but we shall not tolerate anybody who wants to be an impediment on the route to victory in 2016.”

Family

Alhaji Mahama was married to Hajia Zainabu Mahama, 45, and had four children by her: Humu Mahama, 24; Rukaya Mahama, 22; Abukakar Mahama, 15, and Illiasu Mahama, 10.
