ECG prosecutes 30 indebted customers 55668642

About 30 residential and commercial customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Central Region have been hauled before the Twifo Praso Magistrate court following their indebtedness to the company.

According to the ECG, the customers are indebted to the company to the tune of GHC53, 583.

In a statement shortly before the prosecution of the customers, the ECG asserted that the customers had failed to settle their bills after several attempts including power disconnection.

The power distributor said it had no other option than to call on the courts to compel the indebted customers to pay up.

Presiding over the Magistrates court, Eric Baah Boateng expressed regret over the situation.

“Let’s not allow people to abuse the system. This is totally unacceptable. ECG is for all of us. If you don’t pay your bills, we will take you through the process”, he averred.

The PRO of the Central Regional ECG, Mr. Isaac Nurris Ainooson, intimated that the court proceedings were serialized and Tuesday’s was the first in the series of actions that the ECG is using to redeem debts owed it.

“It is regrettable that customers owed the Twifo Praso District office between GHC500 and GHC16, 557 and had done nothing to clear them up. The court action will be replicated in all our districts”, he revealed.

The Presiding Magistrate gave a week’s ultimatum to the 30 prosecuted customers to clear off their debts or in default pay a penalty of GH¢200.

The court action continues on the 30th of June, 2015.
