BECE leakages affects WAEC's credibility – Lecturer

A lecturer with Ashesi University, Dr Lloyd Amoah, has stated that the leakage of some papers in the ongoing Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) undermines the credibility of Ghana’s examination systems.

According to him, the development has the tendency to cast a negative shadow on certificates that emanate from schools in the country.

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) on Wednesday announced the cancellation of five papers in the ongoing BECE.

The affected papers were the subjective test (paper 2) of English Language; Religious and Moral Education; Integrated Science; Mathematics, and Social Studies.

This followed the discovery by WAEC that those papers had leaked. The leaked papers have been scheduled to be re-taken on June 29 and 30, 2015, according to a statement by the WAEC.

Commenting on the development on Morning Starr Thursday, Amoah said immediate measures must be adopted to stop the malpractice.

“In many ways, it undermines the credibility of our national examination systems and the intellectual integrity of our students and the work that they do.

“If somebody presents some sterling grades, because of this recurrent problem, it is not far-fetched for somebody to raise questions about the genuineness of the work that has been done,” he said.

The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has taken over investigations into the leakage. In line with that, the head of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Ghana, Rev. Samuel Ollennu was questioned Wednesday by the BNI on the orders of the National Security Council Secretariat.

It has affected Waec's credibility, it has been affecting their credibility for some time now. It will continue affecting their credibility if nothing is done about it. But do they really care about about loosing their credibility?

This has been going on for a Damn long time. Every year we have these leakages. The public sees it and keeps quiet. Waiting for the time that it will receive enough publicity before they comment .

The blame game has started as usual. That is how most of the problems in our country are solved these days.
I have a very strong will to blame Waec as well for this disease that they have released into our educational sector, but I know that I will be very biased if I don't include we the public who close our eyes and dips our hands into our pockets to buy it for our wards.

The hippocracy of this issue is that these parents are the very first people to blame Waec for spoiling our educational sector with "Apo" forgetting that both the thief and the one who buys from the thief are criminals in the court of law.

Waec has no one to blame because they are the major cause of this. The love for money in our educational sector has resulted in us throwing away our values. After all, it's the certificate that matters they say. No realizes that the number of "Educated fools" is increasing by the minute.

Some students studied tirelessly for this exam only to see their efforts go to waste because others with money had other ideas. The BNI must use people as scapegoats to deter others. It isn't fair.
