Three years ago, when MegaUpload was raided and went offline, millions of users lost access to their personal files. Soon their information will be lost forever. The hosting company, Carpathia, has asked the court's permission to wipe the servers clean, claiming that it bears the high financial costs. In respond, Kim Dotcom disagrees and is trying to do his best to prevent any data from being destroyed.
In January 2012, the American government seized more than 1,100 servers at Carpathia’s hosting facility, and thus far it is still uncertain if MegaUpload users will ever be able to retrieve their personal data. Some users even took legal steps to secure their files, but with no success – 6 requests of a reporter, who used the service to store work-related information, asking the court to find a solution for the return of his files saw no progress thus far.
Carpathia estimated that it cost the company $9,000 a day to keep MegaUpload’s hardware in storage. However, the court ordered the hosting company to preserve the evidence, so MegaUpload services are still gathering dust at the US warehouse. After the hardware was moved to a storage facility, the expenses of the company have been reduced to $5,760 per month. Now Carpathia’s new parent company, QTS, submitted a motion at a Virginia federal court asking for permission to destroy all data on the servers. The company points out that the servers have not been used in the ongoing lawsuit in recent years.
Of course, MegaUpload founder is not happy with the renewed request. Another hosting company, Leaseweb, wiped hundreds of MegaUpload servers 2 years ago, so Kim Dotcom believes that the remaining ones must be preserved at all costs.
