A number of high-profile companies, including Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Twitter have accused American movie industry of trying to resurrect the Stop Online Piracy Act (also known as Sopa). The latter was defeated in Congress three years ago.

The tech firms cooperated and filed a brief with the US court urging judges to strike down a preliminary injunction filed by 6 movie studios – members of the MPAA. The injunction calls for a blockade of the alleged piracy website Movietube.

Indeed, it turned out that a number of copyright owners, including Sony, Paramount, Universal, Disney and Warner Bros are seeking to remove Movietube from the web and prevent other sites from linking to or providing services to Movietube.

Tech giants state that they don’t condone the use of their services to breach copyright and they do cooperate with copyright owners to solve problems, but the injunction in question is legally impermissible and would have serious consequences for everyone.

The Stop Online Piracy Act was a bill presented to the US House of Representatives and meant to expand the powers of American authorities to fight online trafficking in copyrighted and counterfeited goods. It would have given copyright owners the power to request court orders to forbid advertising networks and payment facilities from doing business with the alleged infringers. In addition, rights holders could also ban search engines from linking to reportedly infringing websites and get court orders making ISPs to block access to those services.

Today tech giants are sure that the MPAA is trying to use the court injunction to perform the same functions as were stipulated by Sopa.
