The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on Wednesday tasked the National Communication Authority (NCA) to sanction service providers (internet cafes) who operate pornographic sites.

Ms Josephine Nkrumah, the NCCE Deputy Chairperson challenged service providers to be proactive and adopt measures to block pornographic sites when children patronize their businesses.

She said: “Regulatory Agencies should crack the whip against all those who expose children to harmful media content, especially pornographic materials. Such offenders must face the full rigours of the law”.

Addressing the youth at the Osu Salem Basic School in Accra, as part of this year’s democracy week celebration, which is on the general theme: “A Discipline Ghana,” Ms Nkrumah noted that, some of the youth were using the internet to commit crimes such as internet fraud, theft and impersonation among others.

Ms Nkrumah said the commission was targeting the youth because they were the country’s future leaders, and as such, the nation needs to imbibe in them strong character and values.

The NCCE Deputy Chairperson noted that the internet was built with vast knowledge which could affect the lives of children and urged parents to take keen interest in what their wards watch on the internet.

According to her, vast knowledge could be obtained from the use of the internet, adding that, the knowledge could be used in developing the society within which they find themselves.

Ms Nkrumah observed that gambling among the youth was on the ascendency and urged them to stay away from that habit.

“You should understand and promote the good tenets of the country’s national anthem and pledge. The youth should also protect and keep the environment clean,” she said.

According to her discipline should start from the home, school, workplaces and extended to all spheres of life.

The NCCE Deputy Chairperson advised the youth to take active part in communal work as well as protect the school and government property.
